My morning commute yesterday took me to Southeast Minneapolis, a neighborhood I rarely get to. But I’ve been dying to try a new-ish place on East University Avenue so I left a few minutes early and made a quick stop at Cupcake. To begin with, this coffee shop/bakery has a great name, don’t you think? And better yet, they have a great big huge large coffee cup above their door. Now that’s appealing, and eye catching. That stretch of University Ave is not known for its aesthetics, so this blue teacup really goes a long way.
Given it was 8 o’clock in the AM, I did not go for one of their signature cupcakes. However, I did try a Whole Wheat Brown Sugar scone, which really knocked my socks off. Not too sweet, a bit healthy, and certainly filling, it served as a great breakfast. Since it was my first time there, I nosed around a bit and found some packaged soup in the cooler. The curry corn sounded delicious, but I chose the heftier Chicken Enchilada for lunch instead. The garcon was kind enough to throw in some bread and suddenly, I had both breakfast and lunch covered.
I knew that Cupcake’s cupcakes were amazing (generous co-workers have provided samples in the past), but I wasn’t expecting the soup to be just as mystifying. It was thick with white beans and tomatoes and had real pieces of chicken breast in it. This wasn’t just the dark meat that so many other places hide in their soup, this was honest-to-goodness chicken. And it was good. There’s even enough left over for a quick bite before I head to Yoga tonight.
As for a cupcake? I’ll have to stop by another time. And yes, there will be another time. Anyone care to join me?

me, me, me! it sounds wonderful, and i’m embarrassed to say that i haven’t been there yet, despite its proximity to my home. let’s meet there for breakfast someday, the scone sounds awesome!
