Finally, the garden is planted. Last year I had almost everything planted by the second weekend of May. Not so this year. It’s just been so darn cold. But finally, on the 25th, I got all my little plants into the ground.
Every year I say I’m going to cut back, then I run over to my neighborhood nursery, Minnehaha Nursery, and all hell breaks loose. Again, I barely had enough space, and I think I have a large garden for a city lot.
Anyway, here’s a list of what was planted:
Herbs include basil, tarragon, parsley, cilantro, dill and sage. My chives and mint came back from last year (is mint supposed to do that?)
Vegetables include three heirloom tomatoes (Mr. Stripey and Green Zebra, because I liked the names, and Brandywine), cherry tomatoes, early girl tomatoes, yellow pear tomatoes and three peppers (jalapeno, anaheim and yellow wax). Oh, and carrots in the carrot box.
Because I have to do something new every year (last year it was kohlrabi and sugar snap peas), I planted Thai Eggplants, bush cucumbers and by seeds, bush green beans.
I’ll post about the garden as it (hopefully) begins to grow. We’ve got more sunlight this year since our neighbors cleared their lot of trees, now we just need some warmth! Is there such a thing is a “warmth dance”?
i’m doing my dance right now… it’s been a bit cold for the tiny plants! your basil looks great — that’s one thing i didn’t find at the 2 nurseries i went to last weekend! i need to pick up some soon…
There was plenty of basil at Mother Earth Gardens when I was there Sunday. Way to go Jenn! I got most of my herb garden planted but not all. Still battling the garlic chives. i want to pick up some thyme as mine didn’t come back for the first time in 10 years. Also, some thai chili peppers are going to make the list. And yes, mint is a perennial, so is tarragon & sage. You do have to watch out as mint can be rather aggressive.
i’ve never had sage come back, i think we’re too far north. and it looks like my tarragon did not come back this year. poo…
Your garden looks really great!! You questioned if mint is supposed to come back the following year Absolutely!! Not only does it come back, it can become VERY aggressive and choke out other plants because it has horizontal roots under the ground. You’ll need to be vigilant or it will take over your whole garden. I have wrestled with mint several times in my life. But it is so nice to have and it smells so good. Remember your old mom when your garden starts to bear “fruit”. The extent of my “garden” is one patio tomato plant on my deck.
Regarding the mint. I’m surprised it came back because I planted it in a pot and placed the pot in the garden about five years ago. I removed the pot and the remaining mint last fall. That’s why I was so surprised it came back. But I do love it. Especially in white rice with lime. A great summer side dish.
